The third Eilat International Half Desert Marathon will take place on 29 November 2013, offering participants from Israel and overseas the opportunity to enjoy a sports competition that winds its way through the desert scenery behind the resort city of Eilat on the Red Sea - a great way to combine sports with rest and relaxation in the warm winter sun of the Red Sea.
Participants can choose between a 5k, 10k or half-marathon distance course, all of which begin and end at the Big Shopping Center on the northern edge of Eilat. There is even a 2K race for the children, with events to keep them entertained.
The course takes the runners though the picturesque Holland Forest , climbs up along Roded creek, past the remains of an old gold mine in the Tuchin valley and then continues upwards towards the Shchoret mountain - truly breathtaking scenery.
Running in the desert presents formidable challenges that may be difficult to appreciate fully before coming to a race, no matter how realistic one’s training might be. The forbidding nature of the desert environment — the heat and the cold, the sand and the wind, the merciless sun - all of these factors combine to make the race much
tougher than the distance itself would suggest
